Roaming Charges to be Eliminated
In addition to facilitating quicker airport processing, the agreement will eliminate mobile roaming charges for tourists and professionals traveling between the UK and Switzerland. Trade Secretary Peter Kyle has hailed the agreement as the most significant services trade deal ever negotiated by the UK.
Economic Benefits and Services Mobility
The government anticipates that this agreement will boost UK exports to Switzerland by an estimated £5.2 billion annually over the long term. The deal also solidifies a services mobility arrangement, allowing businesses to operate for up to 90 days without needing a work permit, a measure that was previously set to expire in 2029 but has now been made permanent.
Implementation Timeline for E-Gates
UK passport holders are expected to start using e-gates at Zurich Airport by the end of the year, with plans for Geneva and Basel airports to follow shortly. This initiative is distinct from Switzerland's adoption of the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES), which will also enable UK citizens to use e-gates throughout the EU.
Extended Work Opportunities
Under the new agreement, UK workers, including professionals such as lawyers, accountants, and architects, can transfer to Switzerland for work assignments lasting up to five years without undergoing rigorous economic needs tests. Approximately 800,000 Britons visit Switzerland annually, underscoring the importance of this agreement.
Switzerland as a Key Trade Partner
Switzerland ranks as the UK’s sixth-largest market for services exports, with trade in services amounting to over £30 billion in 2025. Swiss citizens already have the privilege of using e-gates at UK airports, indicating a reciprocal approach to travel ease.

This agreement follows other significant trade deals that the UK has established with countries and regions such as the US, India, the Gulf Cooperation Council, South Korea, and the EU. These agreements form part of a broader strategy to enhance the UK's global trade relationships.
