Indian Judge Under Fire After Controversial Verdict
Tabassum Khan, an additional district and sessions judge in Madhya Pradesh, India, has been subjected to severe online harassment and death threats following her recent court ruling. Judge Khan sentenced 14 men to life imprisonment for their involvement in the lynching of 50-year-old Nazir Ahmad in 2022. The men were convicted of several charges, including murder and rioting.
The Crime and Conviction
The incident occurred when Ahmad was transporting cattle at night and was intercepted by a group of individuals who identified themselves as "gau rakshaks" or cow protectors. Armed with sticks and rods, they beat Ahmad and his two companions, suspecting them of cow smuggling. Ahmad later died from his injuries, while his companions survived and testified in court.
Judge Khan's ruling identified the crime as a clear instance of mob lynching, leading to the conviction of the accused. However, the judgment has sparked backlash, not based on legal merits but on the judge's Muslim identity.
Religious Hate and Online Abuse
Following the verdict, videos emerged online targeting Judge Khan, accusing her of bias against the Hindu convicts. These videos, which included communal slurs and threats of violence, have been widely circulated on social media. Some posts even called for "bloodshed" if the convicted were not released.
A right-wing news channel anchor expressed support for the convicts' families, suggesting that their actions were justified as attempts to protect cows, which are considered sacred by Hindus and whose slaughter is illegal in many Indian states.
Judicial and Public Response
The threats against Judge Khan have prompted significant concern from judicial bodies. The Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association and the Supreme Court Bar Association have publicly condemned the threats and called for action against those responsible. Judge Khan has been provided with police protection as a precautionary measure.
Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju criticized the attacks, stating that they undermine the legitimacy of judicial decisions by focusing on the judge's religious identity rather than the legal reasoning behind her ruling.
Legal and Governmental Actions
The police have launched an investigation, resulting in the arrest of two individuals, and efforts are underway to trace others involved in disseminating threatening content. The cyber cell is actively monitoring social media platforms to prevent further inflammatory posts.
Supreme Court advocate Sanjay Hegde has urged for stronger measures to ensure Judge Khan's safety, citing a similar case where protection was granted to a former judge facing threats.
Recently, the Madhya Pradesh High Court demanded updates on the protection measures for Judge Khan and instructed that her security be maintained.
