Firefighting Efforts Intensify as Wildfire Threatens Paris Region
A substantial wildfire has prompted the deployment of firefighting planes to the Paris area, specifically targeting a blaze in the Fontainebleau forest, located approximately 60 kilometers southeast of the city. The fire, described by officials as both 'virulent' and of 'exceptional scale,' has led to partial closures of major transportation routes, including the main north-south highway, significantly affecting traffic during a key summer travel weekend.
As of early Monday, the fire had already spread across 800 hectares, with little sign of abatement. This marks the first instance in which firefighting planes have been redirected from France's typically drier southern regions to aid in fire management near Paris. The national federation of firefighters' representative, Eric Brocardi, confirmed the deployment of additional resources, including two firefighting helicopters and an observation plane, with the primary goal of safeguarding human lives and property.

In addition to the Fontainebleau forest fire, another blaze disrupted a highway leading east from Paris and interfered with a high-speed rail line connecting to the southern parts of France. The French rail company SNCF reported delays of up to six hours for trains arriving at or departing from Paris's Gare de Lyon station.
The ongoing heatwave in the region, the third of the summer, has been accompanied by record-breaking temperatures across Europe, resulting in severe wildfires in various countries, including a deadly incident in Spain's Almeria and a major fire in north Wales, UK.

The extreme heat has also led to the temporary shutdown of three nuclear power plants in France, aiming to prevent overheating of local waterways from warm cooling water discharges. Meanwhile, the Tour de France cycling event was forced to shorten its stage by 30 kilometers due to temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius.
